This book is perfectly thought-provoking while maintaining a sense of humor, and dare I say it, style. What do I mean by that? The three main characters are relate-able, each with their own flaws and lovable features, and sense of flare too. If you were born around 1980, you'll definitely see yourself in their personas. I thoroughly enjoyed diving into their lives while also asking myself some serious questions. I've been very conflicted this election cycle, and Maegan had a way of voicing those conflicts in ways I haven't been able to myself. I like that. It's a book that sticks with you, long after you've finished the last page. It would be a fantastic book club selection, as it'll allow you to discuss politics in a non-threatening way, even with political polar opposites in the room.Product details

I LOVED this book so much! It was so much fun, it felt like I was in the middle of reading The Devil Wears Prada & watching Sex in the City and the West Wing and Meet the Press all at the same time! Such a smart take on bridging pop culture and young people with our nation's politics and where our country is and headed. I felt like this author understood me and the world I live in with all the issues we face and how we navigate ourselves and our choices in that context. Highly recommend for anyone who is burnt out by this election and tired of seeing people argue on cable news with their daily talking points.

Must read for this election season! The author has woven compelling characters together in a page-turning novel. Both funny & profound, it offers valuable insights on the real life events unfolding daily.
No plot. Not for me, jumps all over the place.
A good read! With this title, I expected a highly political book, but that's not really what this was -- at least to me. It is a portrait of successful women in many different walks of life, struggling to find happiness and connection, searching for what America should mean to them. The book combines humor and farce, melodrama and tweets, mixed mediums and modern mores for communication. Carberry is an astute observer of the ambitious mind and political culture. Give it a try.
Maegan has experienced and seen so much, and is a keen observer of politics, culture, and humanity. She brings it all to this book, including the most beautiful -- and most challenging -- parts of herself and her own story. Her book is filled with fascinating characters, poignant and thought-provoking storylines, charming cultural references, razor-sharp news articles, and delicious pop songs. It will keep you smiling and thinking and questioning throughout, not just about the host of characters she dreams up, but about what's going on around us in the real world. Read this book!
If your worldview of both people and politics allows for gray areas, then you will thoroughly enjoy reading Maegan Carberry’s debut novel, “Do I Have to Vote for Hillary Clinton?” On the other hand, if you believe in a strictly black and white political landscape, then you probably won’t appreciate the complexity of Carberry’s main characters as they navigate what some are calling the most divided and divisive period in modern politics.
While the novel’s title may lead some to assume this engaging work to center on Hillary’s candidacy, they would be sorely mistaken. So too if others believe it to simply advocate support through fictionalization; those who have followed Carberry’s career and writings know better. While her characters represent both sides of the proverbial political aisle, the larger context focuses on the space between their personal political points-of-view and the expectations inherent in our fractured political landscape, where candidates are oftentimes forced to frame their campaign in terms of us versus them; right and left; and politically speaking, black and white.
The same challenges and public expectations exist on an individual level, particularly when we engage with others both personally and through conversations held in public forums such as social media. The societal pressure to conform and fully support one ideology over another, regardless of party line policy or candidates on a ballot, is enormous. The saying, “You are either for us or against us,” seems to be the current expectation. Carberry’s characters indeed grapple with these same challenges, and as the title implies, the issue of gender in politics is front and center. Should a woman vote for a female candidate solely due to a shared gender?
That being said, “Do I Have to Vote for Hillary Clinton?” is also not advocating for the middle either. This is exactly why Carberry’s novel can appeal to voters across the political spectrum, because it begs the reader to at least acknowledge that the space indeed exists and a person’s political journey isn’t always so clear-cut.
The characters and context become a frame through which the reader can experience and engage in complex conversations that oftentimes are lost in a culture that demands answers in less than 140 characters. Is our electoral system out-of-date and do we put too much emphasis on the Office of the President of the United States? Are we looking to be entertained or are we looking for a leader? Why are there so few women in positions of power in politics? Does it matter? How is our understanding of news and world events shaped by the media and the virtual echo chambers we create through our curated news feeds on Facebook and Twitter?
Her narrative is engaging and her characters are certainly not one-dimensional. The format of the novel incorporates a multitude of mediums, from narrative prose, to tweets, text messages, Facebook posts, musical lyrics, blog posts and news articles. The reader is fed information in much the same way as we consume it, and it makes for a unique experience, punctuated by an excellent section of discussion questions and author Q&A that I highly recommend reading. Digesting those “bonus” elements makes me want to read the novel all over again!
