Malik the Pawn starts out pretty generically with the usual suspects in a coming-of-age/adventure novel; the young boy-hero saves his village and is rewarded with service to the temple of one of the recognized deities and of course he is confused as to what this would entail and you, the reader, get to follow along on his journey. From that point on, the author took what could've been formulaic and made it into an interesting tale of loss and redemption- so much so that when I got to the end of the book, I recalled feeling somewhat at a loss myself...so I re-read it. It was even better the second time around...you'll find yourself burning through the pages just to see what happens next, nevermind that you might sort of remember from having read it just before, as you discover new details you may have missed on the first read through. Happens to me all the time.There are some things I felt were missing that would've made the story better from my point of view, but your mileage may vary. I like when the characters are well developed, when stories go into detail about what drives them that is woven into the fabric of the story. I like knowing what they do and why they do it, or at least being able to figure it out. I would've liked to know more about the world they were in; there were a few places that I felt could've used more exposition to flesh out the details, but again, that's personal preference. I also like ambiguous endings where you're not really sure if its over...but at the end of this book, you know its over. I thought the ending abrupt...that is probably the only real complaint I could level at it (except for the brevity in fleshing out the characters) but with all that aside, this is a good book, definitely worth reading more than once, if only to experience a world that is like ours, but at the same time, very much NOT like ours.

Malik the Pawn is true to the best Young Adult material -- simple enough for a ten year old to enjoy, yet meaty enough to keep an adult thinking about it hours after the final page is turned. In a publishing environment stuffed to the gills with "sharecropper novels" and cheap supernatural romances, Malik the Pawn stands out as truly original, deeply conceived material that will completely reward the time spent reading it.
Malik the Pawn is an extremely interesting and very original book, in which the author, through the eyes of young Malik, presents us with a fantasy world as compelling as it is unique.
While it is a bit slow to start with, it rapidly caught my interest once I was past the first seventy pages or so. The writing can at times feel a bit too dense, with a lot happening all at once and little effort made to zoom out and give the reader a moment to take in the situation, but on the whole the book is one I would heartily recommend, and one that I will likely remember for a good long time.
Full disclosure a friend of mine wrote this book, and lent me his proof copy to check out. Does that mean I'm biased? Probably, but I did my best to remain impartial.
Let's get it out of the way and say this is a WEIRD book. It defies expectations at every turn, smashes tropes to smithereens, and leaves the reader going "WHAT THE INFINITE HECK IS GOING ON?!?!?!" So if you are looking for your typical Medieval-ish fantasy with the clueless village boy who goes out into the world and Saves All The Things (on account of being The One, the Chosen, the Lost Heir or whatever), this is not for you. Our clueless village boy, the titular Malik, remains pretty much clueless throughout (though he finally gets a clue in a big way at the end, and it's not in a nice way), and flails about the world wreaking a lot more havoc than he does good.
And what a world! Giant man-eating bugs, crazy gods, zombies, flesh-eating goblins ... these are just a few of the things Malik encounters in his flailing, always at the wrong (or the right?) place at the wrong time. Some of these encounters are fun, some are horrifying, and some are "put down either the sandwich or the book because you can't enjoy both at the same time."
On a technical level, the writing is decent, though it has a lot of first-novel-isms. Maybe we can look forward to a Second Edition, with some of the roughness polished out? In any case, it's well worth the read, and I'm definitely hoping for a Book 2
I really enjoyed this story. The inhabitants of the world are very detailed, and the world itself is quite frightening in a way that presents real danger to the protagonist and reader alike.
Exceptional, original fantasy.
I want to stress the originality, here. It is not a creation of whole cloth -you recognize, at least in concept, most of the fabric. It is not a crass transposition -so common today- where good is really bad and bad is actually good. Rather, it is seeing old things in new light; it lends the sensation of walking the opposite direction down a one way street. Everything old is new again, and though all is where it is supposed to be, it is exciting in its unexpected freshness.
Worth your time to read.

I enjoy sci-fi/fantasy you'll like this book - you might read it while waiting for the next Stormlight novel to land. The world is interesting and made me think of Sanderson a bit - a premodern world with "magic" via multiple deities and haunted by insect-ish monsters. Malik does the usual "adolescent hero-to-be slowly gains in experience and import" storyline but an underlying ominous theme suggests all is not right in the world and subverts the usual hero cliches and kept me guessing how the plot would twist next.
The ending is dark and abrupt - if you read it looking for a happy ending you will be disappointed. I read the last page and thought to myself "This is an atheist's opinion of all the Gods". But I enjoyed the read and the pacing, characters and plot kept me turning the pages and wishing for sequels at the end.
